Does the structure of content help with SEO and AI optimisation?
Yes – it does and we’re going to share that work. While everything to do with SEO and AI seems to have been moving forwards at turbo-speed recently, making it nigh on impossible to be able to prove what’s definitely working and what isn’t, formatting is the exception. Formatting has always been important and it remains crucial for keeping the attention of your users and for capturing the attention of search engines and LLMs (Large Language Models – AI platforms).
We’ve seen first-hand how having effective formatting helps articles to show up in AI overviews, in answers on ChatGPT and Gemini and to rank traditionally in Google searches, too.
Why is the formatting of articles so important for optimisation?

- Search engines like Google need to understand what your content is about and which parts matter most, so semantic HTML signals (just like the ones mentioned below for AI) help it to understand what content is on the page, how important it is and what is most relevant to the search query it’s answering

- AI values hierarchy, so headings, paragraphs and lists help AI to see what is most important, in a logical order
- Semantic HTML signals (headings, lists, tables) help AI to understand what type of information it’s processing
- AI breaks content into chunks to process its meaning, so using a clear structure helps it to find natural breakpoints for its chunks, instead of it having to sift through any information that isn’t as relevant
- Having designated sections for clear information reduces ambiguity for AI – even if you still include qualitative information, first-hand opinions and whimsy – as long as you have all the facts clearly set out, it’ll be able to easily extract the information it needs without misinterpreting it
Overall, what’s important is to cut out the guesswork for everyone. The clearer your content is, the easier it is to digest and be stored – by everyone.
