One of the most vital aspects of an effective blog post is being well optimised for search. Search Engine Optimisation (or SEO) is the strategy employed to ensure that your blog post ranks as well as it possibly can in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). Without good SEO practices, your blog post won’t do its job of being of being found online and driving traffic to your website.

However, a post written just for SEO will not make the grade. It has to educate, inform and entertain the reader too. Google recently introduced its Helpful Content Update and with its focus on E-E-A-T (essentially websites offering Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness), it is clear to all that blogs must be useful for readers, match search intent and provide accurate and up to date information.

Writing engaging content also helps to craft your brand tone of voice, making your business more recognisable and building brand loyalty amongst your customers.

So, with that in mind, let’s dive straight into our five top tips for blog writing in 2025:

1.      Create an appealing title

Although they’re only a few words, a blog title can often be the most difficult part of the post to craft. Titles must be appealing enough to encourage users to click on the search result, as well as being clear and easy to understand.

Crucially, your blog post must then deliver on its title. Otherwise, a title could be seen as click-bait by Google, causing your visitors to bounce and leave your site within seconds, when they don’t get the answer they’re looking for.

2.      Choose a great blog topic

One of the first steps in crafting a fantastic blog post is to choose a engaging topic. Find out what your customers or readers want to know and write a blog post to answer this. This could be a known problem in your industry or something that you have had a lot of questions about from customers.

Thorough keyword research will help you to find potential blog topics as well as give you words, phrases and topics to include in your blog post to help it rank more effectively.

3.      Include real-life examples

Writing for SEO only can to lead to content which is simply factual with no other illustration, and this can be end up disengaging readers. Strategic storytelling helps to actively engage readers and make difficult-to-understand concepts more tangible.

When real-life examples are included, readers often feel that they can take away lessons and use them in their future experiences. Wherever you can, try to weave in some examples of the things that you are talking about in the blog post. This will add weight to your points and help readers to remember what you’ve discussed.

An example of this could be including a story about yourself like this one: ‘I have been to many conferences with presentations on content creation. The ones that really stand out to me are the ones which include examples I can write down and then use in my future work.’

If you don’t write in the first person on your blog, you can also include examples of the concept you’re talking about, as we have done above for the blog titles.

4.      Break down your content into bitesize chunks

No one wants to scroll through a huge block of text in order to find the section of the post they’re looking for. Breaking down blocks into shorter paragraphs and separating them with clear headings helps the reader to skim the article and find the bit they’re looking for.

Keep paragraphs short with a maximum of three sentences and include bullet points for lists of items or steps.

Breaking your content down in this way can also help your post to rank on Google and other search engines. Adding headings and bullet points makes your content easier for their crawlers to read and increases your chances of being included in a featured snippet. Featured snippets get approximately 8% of all clicks, so it’s traffic not to be sniffed at (source: Search Engine Land.)

Including H2 and H3 headings also helps Google to see how your content is structured and which sections are considered to be the most important.

5.      Provide a solid Call To Action (CTA)

CTA stands for Call To Action, and it refers to a short phrase which encourages the reader to do something next. Calls to action are often very specific requests that create a sense of urgency. Depending on what your blog post is about, calls to action could be to purchase, comment, subscribe to an email newsletter, or read a related blog post.

With every blog post you write, you should have a clear idea of what action you’d like your reader to take next. Your CTA should be included at the end of your blog post as a final sign-off to your reader, but you may also want to pepper them throughout your content.
